explaining a fault code - hopefully

fuel quantity control out of range- fault code 64 -- can anybody explain what this may mean please

You don't want to know the answer  :'(

But, before you replace the Fuel Injection Pump, try some neat diesel magic in the fuel filter first.

Incidentally, is it a manual or auto, and if manual, tend s to do it in lower gear, or when changing into or out of 2nd?

Yeah, thats what I guessed, along with your PM.  That seems to be the common symptoms.

Try the diesel magic trick as mentioned earlier, if that doesn't work, then you have a huge problem.
