sump and main casting gasket replacement
« on: 23 February 2009, 11:35:25 »

I need an urgent help about this.

I need to change main casting gasket (upper sump gasket).
Is it possible to do it without removing subframe?

If not, how complicated is to remove the subframe?

car is omega 2.5 v6.

Nope, subframe off job.

Not to hard (subframe bolts are very tight) but, you need to support the engine from above.

i'm reading haynes right now...it doesn't seem too much of a job to do...

approximately how much time needed for the complete job (sump + subframe) with fairly good mechanic doing the job (but not experienced whit V6)?

damn it...why does everything need be so complicated?

You dont need to remove the subframe completely, just undo front bolts several turns and remove rear bolts. carefully lower subframe using a jack until you have enough space to remove upper sump.
You must use an engine support beam to take the weight of the engine.

I did one in around 4 hours including a new front crankshaft seal.
Use the grey (oil cooler) sealant on both upper and lower sumps.

If you are chasing an oil leak I would replace the front crank seal first (and turn the spacer around...see guide). Most leaks are from the crank oil seal and the oil blows back to lie on the sump flanges.

it's definitely upper sump gasket, I can see a place where the oil leaks.

So, no need to disconnect steering parts (lower arms and stuff) from subframe? just remove subframe bolts and lower the subframe a bit down (as far as the suspension parts allow it)? of course, engine hanging from a beam, or supported by a jack....

You cant support engine on a jack.....you are removing the sump remember? :)
Try to spray some penetrant and oil onto the subframe bolt threads before you undo them (accessible through holes in chassis) If you dont and a captive nut starts spinning you are totally stuffed.

Clean the flanges with celulose thinner before applying the sealer, close the joint within 60 secs.
Dont use ordinary silicone sealer or instant gasket, it wont work.

Not trying to hijack but I've same issue eg oil leak, do you have to remove the cam belt to replace the crankshaft seal?

I dont have a manual at present and not done this on a mig V6 but I think you do.

Have a look in the maintainance guides, I think I did one for this.
Cambelt has to be removed. Be warned...do not use an air driver on the sprocket bolt or try to undo the bolt without bolting a reaction bar to the sprocket.
