Noisy rear wheel bearing
« on: 28 February 2009, 21:03:13 »

I have a 2004 2.2 petrol estate with 95,000 on the clock, during the last week I have become aware of a noisy rear wheel bearing which appears to be getting worse by the day.

I think it is the offside one that is worn as it becomes slightly quieter when turning right (no change when turning left), is this correct?

A quick read of Haynes makes it look a bit of a pig needing a much larger torque wrench than I have (could hire one) and a series of special pullers.

Has anyone managed to change one using simple techniques or will I have to reluctantly take it to a garage?

Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated, I do prefer to do as much as possible myself but I am a bit of a 7 stone weakling and not in my first flush of youth anymore!

There's a maintenance guide on changing the front ones, have a read of that, it may give you an idea.

The rear bearings are a nightmare to change if you dont have the proper pullers. Ive done a couple (in a equiped workshop) and it was still a pain.
Sorry to bring bad news but unless you have access to a press and can get the rear arm off i would say its a garage job (and a compentent one at that)

They are a bloody nightmere!!, had to do one for my dad after his 2.5 estate collapes when towing his caravan back from wales to Northampton, their were'nt much left
They come out from the front, after taking all the brake system for that wheel off first, disc, caliper, brake shoes and the drive shaft, then undoing the large nut and the large circlip, we had to hammer ours off due to the state of the bearing, a good days work and doing it in the street!!
Their are a few types of bearings as well for the omega, due many to what its used for ie police work hearse etc.
  enjoy.  :-/ :-/

Thanks for your replies, looks like I'm going to have to ring a few garages for quotes as I don't like the sound of the work involved.
