Blocked breather box..
« on: 04 March 2009, 11:06:05 »

Decided to start cleaning breather pipes and hoses as the motor wasnt running fantastically, and when i took off the black crank breather/fume box it was absolutely chocka block with thick mayonnaise.i managed to get most of it out and then clean the rest with carb cleaner. Its now running a lot better.

Just one question though. After driving the car up to running temperature, and lift the bonnet, you get a smoky oily smell coming from that area(black breather box,top right of block) and i have noticed that the cat has got smoke/vapour coming of it.I know the cat gets very hot but is it right to visibly smoke? The smoke/fumes are coming up into the engine bay.Is this normal?

no not normal, in not too familiar with 4 pot layout but sounds like oil leaking onto the cat.

Edit. Although are you sure its not just residue left over from the work you've just done?

Did think it may be oil leaking onto cat.Checked cam cover and plugs were clear of oil.Black crank breather box is clean and i replaced the rubber hoses for it(one to cam cover other to metal crank breather pipe).Did notice a bit of oil on the manifold but think it is an old build up.

Any ideas where it could be leaking from if its is ending up on the cat?

It could be the work i did,but i did it over a week ago

So, you cleaned the breather box, the metal pipe below it, the ports on the cam cover and teh throttle body and associated breather pipes?

Its likely to be oil from the cam cover gasket due to the blocked breathers.

You may find that over time (assuming the breathers are all now clear and the cam cover gasket is sealed) that it will go.

Correct Mark,i did all of the above around a week ago. When i first got the motor(around 1 month ago)there was a visible drip of oil on the sump and over a few days it left a few little oil marks on the drive. After doing the above work, the sump seems to be lear of any fresh oil drips and have had no new marks on the driveway, but as i said i still get the smoke and fumes from the cat.

It can take quite q while for the oil to burn off.....can you give the block and cat etc a good wash down?

Soapy water and a pressure washer works best.

Mind not to soak any of the ancillaries (i.e. aircon pump, PAS pump and alternator), you can cover them with plastic bags if needed
