Battery struggling to start the car
« on: 05 March 2009, 20:36:36 »

This started happening a few weeks back, the car will start fine after it's been left standing for any period of time or overnight etc, even when we had the sub zero temps for several weeks on end it's always started striaght away without any trouble.

One day on the way to work i'd stopped off to get a paper, i was out of the car for no more than 2 minutes but when i went to restart it the starter would barely turn the engine over, as if the battery was flat.  The car had started perfectly normally some 10 minutes prevously when i'd set off.

This now seems to happen pretty much everytime i stop the engine and leave it for only a few minutes, if i leave it for longer it will start as normal.

When driving everything is normal, the battery is charging when the engine is running and even with the lights, air con, blowers and just about every other electric gizmo running it still runs fine.

I was thinking maybe the battery was goosed but seeing how it's been fine with all the really cold weather i'm now not so sure.

Sounds like the battery's not getting enough of a charge after the ten minutes of running.  Mine was a bit like that a few weeks back, then the battery totally died.  Replaced last week and not a problem since.  Sounds like you've checked the alternator, might be worth trying to work out how old the battery is...    :-?

i had a similar problem on an old astra, when cold it would turn over lovely but when the engine got hot the starter would either turn slowly or not at all with just a click, leave it for 1/2 hour & it would be fine again, it ended up being the starter motor that when hot through engine temp something in it was expanding making it tight. [or so the AA man said], i changed it & no problems after :y
