Blowing exhaust manifold.

Evening all. My miggy sounds as if the o/s exhaust manifold gasket is blowing. It ticks when started from cold but stops once engine is at reunning temp.  How easy are they to do? I've done them before on a vectra and numerous other motors, but not a v6. is it the sort of thing that could be done at Newent meet? Cheers in advance for any advice, Mark. :question

It's not too difficult 'cos I managed to do it  ;D Just takes time to strip everything down.

The most difficult part I found is undoing the two bolts that screw the water pipe into the back of the engine block. The manual says to undo the oil transfer pipes and move them ouot the way which gives a tiny bit more space to get a spanner in - I used an 8mm ratchet spanner. Or, depending what tools you've got you can leave the oil pipes and twist your hand into an impossible space to get the nuts off.

The only other gotcha I found was that it's best to drop the cat down because otherwise it's a real b*s**rd to get the manifold back in place if like me you put the studs in first.

I did not have any studs break on me but I guess you could either do like the muppet did on the other side and just leave the stud broken, otherwise I think it's a head off job.

Lol, I did one at the lakes, took about 3-3.5 horus all in.

Not to bad to do, quite a bit to come out.

I was reading throught he Bodge It Book and apparently (according to Haynes) you either have to take the head off or the engine out. I don't believe this to be so as it seems on most of them there is enough spcae (JUST) to get in there and do it.

I need to do it on mine too so any ideas would be useful to me too....

The right hand side (driver's) can be removed. Haynes says that the left hand side cannot be removed due to the lack of space. I took off the head to do the left hand side - didn't try removing the manifiold on its own...

The passenger side one can be done with the head in place, you just have to undo the engine mountings and move the engine over.

I think my left hand manifold is blowing and was led to believe that the engine would have to come out, thankfully bythe look of these posts it dont.......phew :y
