Looking at a 2.5TDi saloon
« on: 11 March 2009, 23:56:52 »

Hi All

Just done my first post in the newbie section, take a look and it will explain my predicament.

I have a very limited budget to buy myself an Omega Diesel. Would prefer an estate but I think funds will only allow for a saloon. Max spend in the close region of £800.

Went to look at one today, it was a saloon, 2.5TDI, light bluey grey met colour, CD spec, 105,000 miles, FSH, 1997/R. It drove like a dream, pulled like a train, no smoke, manual g/box and clutch were excellent, good tyres all round, scruffy but cleanable interior.

Thats the good points but there were quite a few bad, these were, 1) Rust, bottom of one rear door and top of the other and a dent in the rear wing which has been badly pushed out. 2) Bloke selling it says it sometimes has a tendency to cut out when coming up to a junction, i never experienced this myself. 3) looking at the engine, no's 1 and 6 injectors are bubbling a fluid at their base (diesel i suspect), 4) Handbrake, although it works, there is nothing at the beggining of its travel and the only work it does is in the last 2 inches. 5) Sunroof is inoperative. 6) Interior mirror snapped off.

There was also a Monroe pressure guage in the boot with a tyre valve attatched for the rear suspension. Is this standard. (car has got a towbar).

Mot'ed till October and taxed till end April.

It was up for £895 but it could be mine, as is, for £750.

I know I can't expect miracles for such a tight budget but by the same token I don't want, and can't afford, to have my pants pulled down either.

Finally, what sort of real world MPG could I expect?

What do all you experts think?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!!

Hi mate and welcome to the forums........

Not an expert on diesels (or petrols to be honest) but for £800 quid I believe you can get yourself a lovely early facelift with not much wrong with it........or a very nice late prefacelift.......so have a good look around before settling for something which may be trouble........

Hello, and welcome.  As for a book price, that one is a little too dear, especially considering the cutting out, rust, and the dent.
I would keep looking, you will soon find a better model.

diesel leak will most likely be the leak off pipes ten min job,
cutting out at junctions is just a sticky pot diesel magc should clear it miht take a couple of goes tho caused by supermarket fuel usually
interior mirroe glue back on
self adjusters is a bonus
rusty doors is fairly normal just find a non rusty set and swap them
manual is a big bonus  you can chip it freely without foear of gearbox meltdown
mpg std around 40ish in a run
chipped higher!!!!!
105k is low mileage but they are easy to adjust?
if it drove well everythng else is fixable and its what you want then go for it

You need to negotiate on that price - given the description here.

Tyre pressure valve/gauge suggests that it's got Monroe Ride Levellers fitted. These are not standard, but great if you tow a caravan like me. (I've fitted them to mine).
Fuel bubbling around injectors is very likely to be a weeping leak-off pipe - cheap and easy to fix.
Cutting out - could be several things, but usually cured with a good dose of Diesel Magic or Forte.
MPG - Mine's chipped, and I get a pretty constant 33mpg. Quite possibly, this could creep up to around the top 30's when driven steadily.

If you're still interested - negotiate hard mate!

Hi Squealy - hows it going? Noticed your in Boston, whereabouts as I was born and raised there for 21 years!!

Regards to the tractor (TD) the desc. you gave seemed to be pretty good - the mileage does sound a bit too good to be true, mine is a '96 and has just ticked over 185k - I have never seen one the same age with anything less than 150k.

The other problems have been diagnosed by the others - so for what its worth I thin kit sounds good. See if the guy will come down to what you want to pay - any roblems can be fixed as there is a wealth of inforamtion available here.

Good luck!

I know of a nice 1998 T plated 2.5TD saloon for around the same money.

Full Elite spec - memory seats/mirrors, bose, HID headlights, chipped, AR35 gearbox (to cope with chip), CARiN Satnav, cruise, all the usual Elite stuff.

Bad points. A/C doesn't work. 3 of the 4 seat heaters don't work. Something nasty has been spilt in boot, carpet mostly clean now though. scab of rust on passenger door, also rust on top of a rear door (replacement door in garage, not fitted yet ::))

Service history isn't great, except the last 2yrs that have been VERY heavily documented on this site ;D

Mileage I'd have to check, think its coming up to 140k

Hi Platty

I live near the Mcdonalds, Aldi, Halfords retail park, just off Broadfield lane. Only moved up here 2 1/2 years ago due to meeting a lady, needing a bigger house to put all our kids in and the houses being over half the price of anything in my old home town, Hemel Hempstead.

Not much to do here, traffic is possibly the worse I have experienced in the UK, and I do 60,000+ miles a year so I know what im talking about there. But it is lovely when , on a summers night, you get in from work and within 30ish minutes you can be on the seafront at Skeggy.

Cheers
