Oil leak
« on: 25 March 2009, 08:45:11 »

hi
just wondering if anyone can help i have a slight oil leak on the front of my elite 3.2 not a bad leak but a leak nevertheless tootling around and about its only oil damp on front near oil switch under front crankshaft pulley but to the left as you look at the front, there is also a weep on the lower left cam cover bolts so i thought im sure its cam cover gasket maybe coz breathers blocked so took it garage and asked to check if breathers blocked but was told "No sir they not but slight leak from bottom cam cover gasket"So i thought next service ill get em done but ive noticed if i go on long journey and give her a bit of stick the oil leak is worse and  now i come to my main query if i take the oil filler cap off with the engine running there is  smoke coming out of the filler it doesnt use any oil even with the slight leak it hardly goes down on the dipstick i had a 98 cdx before this for 6yrs and tho i had to do cam covers on that i dont think it ever blew smoke out of the filler neck but the  3.2 does not have the EGR so im consoling my self its ok its not a lot of smoke but i can see the haze coming up and im thinking i bet the breathers are blocked unless this is normal of course TIA of your answers

Certainly sounds like the breathers may be blocked.  Always worth ensuring they are clear as simply clearing them can sometimes resolve a cam cover leak - the combustion blowby pressure has to vent somewhere....

A fair amount of smoke from warm engine through oil filler is quite normal. I had leaks on cam covers and the reason were 10 hard O-rings out of sixteen and slightly hardened cam cover gaskets. As I wrote here somewhere there was no trace of any kind of blocking of breathers, just slightly oiled surfaces was all I found.

So, my idea of the original issue is that you simply have the gaskets/O-rings leaking.

One more question to the Experts: is the breather system different in some way in DBW engines? No, I assume...

there is normally a small clip that you just need to open up with a screw driver and it will slide off
