Logically Yes but one of the fitters @ work said if the pump's in it's early stages of retirement it could be struggling to get the oil to the furthest lifter when colds hence quiet when the oil's thinner which makes sense. With help/parts from 2 of the "Marks" the engine is sweet as. It pulls like stink (ask Ian_D)!!, no smoke EVER, holds good temp. & when warm is one of the quietest you'll find. ::)

When the heads were refurbed - how many holes in T Vents?
Recon heads courtesey of MDTM so no worries there. :y

everything was spotless james when put back together ! t vents were from original heads im heading down the oil pump road with it the pick up pipe when i removed the sump was partially blocked with a couple of old cam cover o rings and silicone sealant from the bodged cam covers ! it really is a shame cause when its warm its as sweet as a nut and pulls very very well !!  :-/ :-/

If it was totally buggered yes you'd end up with a seized crank, but the thoughts are more that it could be a bit tired so it's not building as much oil pressure as it did.
Therefore when the oil has been pushed through all the oilways in the engine its a bit lacking in pressure to supply one of the injectors hence it's noisy.
When the oil warms up it gets thinner and easier for the pump to push it through the engine and your problem disappears.
That's my theory which may be bollix but gives you something to ponder over.
Wonder if you can do an oil pressure test easily, that might give you some evidence to prove it one way or another.

You've just written everything i've been thinking John. If the oil pump was totally winkered it'd be game over, but if tired it's gonna struggle to get cold oil to the furthest lifter hence the same rattle on the 3rd set now, same fault every time. Is there a way to check oil pressure? How long can i drive it before the tired pump does let go completely?
We've come so far with this car, she's my baby but i need to be as sure as poss before taking the plunge...again.

How much is a NEW oil pump for a 98 3.0 MV6 manual? gulp :'(

I know you've tried many different lifters but have you checked the the lifter bore for wear? The oil is pumped in to the lifter from a small hole in the bore. If the bore is warn then the oil will escape up the side of the lifter. Of course when things warm up then the tolerence would get smaller and maybe the oil then gets directed into the lifter.

Hi Doz & thanks for the reply. You could be on the right track had the car not been fitted with recon heads from MDTM (admin). This was happening with the original heads.
I still welcome any ideas PLEASE!!!!! :'(
