I know many of oofers are abs members but lifted this from there as i thought it would give food for thought on hbv probs and solutions for TD owners,,

Well I finally got round to removing the valve last night and there were definitely signs of leakage. Anyway, used the car round town a bit today and took it on a couple of miles of dual carriage way just as a test and got some unexpected results.

There are now obviously no signs of leakage and as expected the heater still works hot and cold as normal, the unexpected thing is that the engine temperature is now far more stable than it was before. On the over run it used to get a lot cooler and on a steep incline it used to heat up a lot. It now seems to spend most of the time sitting just below the half way mark without cooling down on the over run, but it also doesn't seem to get anywhere near as hot or as quickly.

When the fans do kick in on the low speed it seems to take the same amount of time to cool back down as it did before so it looks like it has just given the thermostat a lot more control over the engine temperature.

So guess what I won't be doing any time soon..... Replacing the valve!
