hi all
i am having troubles with my mig, when the temp gets to 97ish the small fan on the left of the two at the front of the aircon condenser comes on but this is when the eco mode is on, when eco off the same fan comes on intermittantly all the time but the temp is getting up to 100, i have never seen the right hand fan or the larger one behind the rad come on at all, does anyone know what the sequence is for these fans?

They should come on all together  (the two in front of the condenser, and the one in front of the intercooler, with the addition of the auxiliary electric pump when the engine is off) in my experience, at around 97-98 °C (before 100 anyway) when aircon is off. With aircon on, they should always be on.
I myself have never noticed two speeds on my BMW-equipped Omega.

well there is definatly only one of my fans coming on, before the warmer weather started the temp never went above 98 but that was without the a/c on and cooler outside air temp. now it seems that with only one fan its struggling to cope with the heat.

I did post before on this, now I cant remember the exact sequence but its something like....

Aircon on eco no fans will run until car reaches 92 Deg
Aircon on, at least one fan wil turn over at low speed all the time
At 92 Deg A fan (or maybe 2 I cant recall) will come on at half speed until the temp goes down to something like 85 (or thereabouts)
at 95 Deg one or more fans comes on at full speed. You will know this is happening as its a bit noisy, kind of last resort cooling.

In my case it was getting to 95 then the high speed kicked in, never got a low speed at all. Turned out to be a blown fuse in the engine bay near the battery.

Right, lets clarify this a bit.



Aircon on (ECO off) - both front fans should be running at low speed (unless approaching 100C on gauge, they'll be on high speed)
Aircon off (ECO On) - both front fans will be off, until the temp gauge reads just over midpoint (so about 96C on prefacelift cars, 92C on facelifts), at which point slow speed fans should come on. If the temp approaches 100C, high speed fans will turn on.

(note: 2.0/2.2 only have 1 front fan. some 2.5td have intercooler fan that comes on with low speed fans when temp just over mid point)

If only 1 fan ever comes on, need to look at wiring diags and go through the relays and fuses.  Haynes book of 'dangle berries' has a wiring diag that covers it reasonably well.

looked at bigdodds reply and the link posted, shot outside to the old girl and what do you know the fuse he pionted out had gone. changed the fuse took her out for a good run and the temp now stays around the half way mark (95-97). the fans then stayed on for a short time after i had stopped so all in all im over the moon that this has cost me 40p to sort out. bigdoods and theboy, you are legends, this forum is the best thing ive ever seen on tinternet and anyone who has a mig should come here long before booking their car in anywhere!
