Engine misfire on idle and driving
« on: 28 June 2009, 15:55:00 »

Ihave an Omega 3lt Vreg which, after changing the cam belt, flushing the cooling system and engine due to the previous owner not understanding the benefits of changing the oil and adding the proper amount of anti freeze. I have now developed a fault with the engine. On tickover and while driving around town, the engine misfires irregularly, when on a trip out on the main roads where around 50 mph the ride is much smoother. On idle the engine revs are around 500rpm but do'es drift up and down by up to 30-40rpm.
Also when i did the other work i cleaned out the auto gear box selector swich with switch cleaner. this seems to have worked so far.
I have checked the timing belt and had a listen for possible air leaks etc but all seems ok. I am at a loss now.
Can anybody help pleeese! :'(

Probably coil pack and or spark plugs, try the paperclip test to see what codes come up.

Omega Lord, I don't know how to do the paper clip test.
Today i took the car out after a couple of days being idle and at first it was good as gold after a few miles i stopped and immediatly could smell very hot smell from under the car, anyway i drove off and the car started to stutter again but also i became aware of a whine from somewhere, couldn't make out from where.
When i got back into town and into the traffic the car shuddered when moving off from a stop a few times. Do you think maybe i still have a problem with the gearbox, and would this cause the original problem? Also the car seems to be heavier on fuel than befor when the car did the shuddering bit the revs seemed normal.
I still need to check the plug leads etc. :'(

Changed the c.s sensor, forgot the car was supposed to go that well. drves much more smoothly, no more shuddering and the tickover is constant now.
Thanks for the advice you people. much appreciated.
One point that may be helpfull. When i unplugged the sensor connector i tied a bit of string to it and pulled the connector down so that when i bolted up the new one and retied the string to the new connector i could pull it up to follow the same path as the old one. worked ok.
thanks to all. :y

That`s what usually gives sensor problems. Sensor rarely fails, its the wiring that goes due to the route VX use
