My pinking, may not be what i thought
« on: 26 June 2009, 19:55:26 »

Hi, ive had trouble with the revs not settling properly, seem to have sorted it by going over every tube, pipe and tightening if needed. But ive still got the pinking, now im wondering if its pinking at all and its the water pump rattling. Not losing any water, but today listen to the engine and heard a rattling sound coming from the water pump area. Can these start to rattle without leaking water? I imagine its the original as theres no reocord of it been changed in the service history.

you shouldn't be able to detect pinking these days...

the knock sensors will pick it up and retard the engine to bring it into line.

A good diag computer will reveal if this is happening

Thats why i was thinking its the water pump as hearing a tapping noise from it today, so i was asking if they can rattle before they start to leak?

hi, Finally the rattle(thought was pinking) has gone, changed drive belt tensioner and new belt. Also codes have all gone except 31 and 135 which i know is nothing. The only thing ive noticed is now and then a little steam from the exhaust depending on weather, if its cold or damp. Not losing any water and no oil in water or vice versa. Could this be down to the type of oil that is in it at the moment which is Castrol GTX Magnetec. Got 2X5 litre cans of geniune vauxhall oil to go in soon.

Bit of steam now and again is normal.

Interesting this pinking issue: I normally run mine on Shell with V-Power every other tank. If I get caught short with only a BP or Texaco in the vicinity twice in a row, the engine starts pinking when the torque converter locks at about 50 under light throttle. Tank of V-Power shuts it up. You'd have thought a duff knock sensor would put the management light on but I'd know that noise anywhere!

Having to use Asda petrol, all the stations near me have closed down and are now housing. Only other near me is Tesco's. I think the closest Shell is about 5 miles from me.
