Camshaft Position Sensor - P0340 fault
« on: 17 July 2009, 15:50:23 »

Hello all.

Can anyone help ?.

Car is fine starting from cold. However, when it is warm it has an intermitant fault with it not starting on the turn of the key, and the whole car seams to shake, then eventually after couple or three times it will start, but then the Orange engine light stays on, and the engine doesn't seam to run so smooth.  And feels like its reving more than normal !!.

Had my code reader on it, and it comes up with code P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor A circuit bank 1 or single sensor.

Checked the monitoring of the engine running, and all ok, no other errors are coming through ?.

Is anyone able to tell me where the sensor is, and if it's easy to change.
And have I got to get one from the Steelers, or is there anywhere else I can get a quality replacement ?.

Appreciate any help / advice - Thanks.

easy to change, and a common failure.

the plastic cover that hides plugs/coil pack - right at front you see a cable. Thats cable to sensor.

Sensor is bolted to rea cambelt cover, to you need to remove aux belt, and front cambelt cover to loosen the stud that retains sensor.

Thanks The Boy for letting me know.

Went out today to do a local skip run, and to try my mig again, light came on from cold today, got to the recycle place about mile away, turned engine off while I empty the boot, then when I started the car, all seams back to normal.  Still I'm not trusting it, and think I ought to change it as soon as posssible.

Do you have any idea how much a genuine costs, as I'm not too keen on trying to get a cheap one of evil-bay as cheap buying doesn't mean cheap fix necessary.  And don't fancy doing the job twice due to the inconvenince !.

Thanks.  :)

Thanks Jimbob.

Had a feeling it wouldn't be cheap  :( .

Haven't got Trade card, so looks like I'll have to pay full price   :( .

Think when I've fixed this problem, I'm going to have to get rid of the mig   :'(  :'( .

Had loads of help from you chaps & lasses on here, which really apprecated.

Thing is only owned it since January, having full service history, and thought it would be a good buy - Not the case, there seams to be something going wrong with it nearly every month !!.  So I'm not impressed.  Nice car when it runs though.

Know where I'll be visiting next week then, beer money being wasted on the car then !!.  >:(

think twice before getting rid, been a bad run, but they are normally reliable enough, have a set of niggles, which you seem to have gone through.

keep em well serviced and they are generally ok.

Its been a very long run of bad luck to be honest Jimbob, and I'm starting to lose heart in keeping it now.

my other thread said is about trying to sort out the Transmission oil change and filter change, as that isn't going to be too cheap, so this has really bugged me this happening as well  :( .

I had a lot of plans for the mig, some nice alloy wheels, lower the suspension, get the headlights done in black to be a little different, maybe a front & rear spoiler. But all done tastefully, and not looking like I've just driven through Halfords and not stopped !.

Thanks for the advice about PM'ing Andy c, but as I don't know him, think it maybe cheeky to ask if he can get me a part cheaper for me ?!.

As Jimbob said, the Omega isn't that bad compared
to most cars. All cars have their problems, but the Omega
isn't that bad and the parts are relatively cheap and
plentiful. The 4 pot is also easy-peasy to work on
with most parts accessible.

Take a look at honestjohn.co.uk and check out any
car you like on the 'Car-by-Car' tab near the top of
the page. Some cars faults will  make your eyes water!!

Here's a link to a so-called quality Merc. Pah!  :P
Just scroll down to the 'What's Bad' bit.

Jimbob,

Just PM'd Andy C, so I'll see what he says ?.

Thanks for the info.

Grumpy

Yeah I know your right, everyone has problems, and every model of car has it's little pitfalls with something or other. But I've had cars (which are called classics now) in the past that seamed to be more reliable, and you could fix them at the side of the road.

It is getting dis-heartening though, thinking you've (me) bought a good car, then wonder if it's a pup !.
I'm hoping once I get the sensor & transmission problems sorted, that that'll be it for a very long while - Ruddy hope so !!.
