On Going Heater Problem.
« on: 24 July 2009, 22:53:27 »

Hi,
I took the car for a run up the M40 yesterday at about 70 to 80 mph for about 10 miles and at first the temp. gauge sat at 95 but after 5 miles it steadily went up to 100, then back to 95 and back to 100 again. I then came off the M/way on to a mixture of roads and the gauge went up to 100 to 102.5 and back to 100 and just under but never going as low as 95 :(.
Before i do a complete flush of the cooling system can someone tell if the 2 pipes to the heater matrix should both be hot regardless of heater being on or off?
What is the best setting to have the digital climate control set at when on auto in the hot weather?
If my temp. gauge reads 102.5 when driving would you expect some visual problems under the bonnet as it seems to run fine with no loss of power or smoothness?
All fans seem to be working fine!
Is there anyone near to me who could have a look if need be or has a Tech 11 to check actual temp. and any other necessary checks?

              Cheers,
                         Pete.

Yes Daz as said they seem to work fine.

I'm not actually sure it's getting overly hot or it's the gauge playing silly buggers as it seems to drive spot on and doesn't miss a beat whatever the gauge says ::).

sounds like you have a airlock in the system pete! i had a simalar problem with mine ,i gave it a good flushing and it is ok now  if the matrix pipes are hot on the inlet and outlet surely that means the heater is swicthed on ?have you tried turning the heaters on full and see if the temperature comes down? :y

I've tried running it with the header tank cap off and squeezing the hoses and doesn't seem to be any air in the system :).
As for the heater, the 1st time i took it out for a run the top pipe to the matrix was cold but when i returned it was hot and the heater worked OK but the next time it was cold again although when it was working it did lower the temp. somewhat:(.

I think I'll just give it a good flush and see what happens :-/.

When i went out yesterday the dash display read 17.5 for outside temp. but was hotter than that so that's not correct and as for Tech twoing it I'll have that done if the flush has no affect ::).

hope not give your matrix agood blow through . if that dont cure it then go to the thermostat, that could be sticking.put a strong mix of coolant in give it a good run put heaters on full heat and if it blows hot you have cured it  top up coolant  :y

Thanks P.J :y.

What's the best stuff(preferably something you put in and run for a while)to use to clean out the system?

Also is it OK to run the engine for a test few miles with just water in the system to see if the flush has worked as i don't want to really waste another lot of antifreeze ::).

Running a few miles without antifreeze wont do any harm for the purpose of checking the running temp.
