Looks nice but it has flatulence
« on: 26 July 2009, 23:14:55 »

Little problem with my car, it's just sounding a little bit farty when I take my foot off the pedal and when I brake. Sort of uneven popping noise. You probably know what I mean.
I have to drive up to Scotland next weekend and am a little bit worried.
Any ideas? Someone mentioned that it may be an exhaust blow but it is a SS system so shouldn't be.
Grateful for any suggestions.
Cheers, Kieren

I had it on my harley and it was due to it sucking in air. Check your manifolds, inlet and exhaust. May be loose or need new gaskets.
It's usually due to unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust.

Agreed. Normally a lean mixture or air leak into exhaust system. It's odd that it's doing it during overrun because normally the fuel supply is cut if the throttle pedal is released until RPM drops below around 1000.

Other things to check: EGR valve perhaps not closing properly (is the idle OK?).

Potentially the secondary air injection - maybe the valve is not closing.

Have you checked for fault codes?

You're going a bit fast for me. Tickover sits around 400 rpm according to the rev counter.
The Boy put his Tech2 on the car at Ashridge and said that I might have an air leak somewhere around the bit that sits on top of the enging.
Don't know a huge amount about these engines to be honest, it's all a bit complicated and I have limited knowlege.
Thanks for the comments though. Should I take the air intake apart and if I do what should I be looking for?
Cheers, Kieren

Get some carb cleaner and spray around LIGHTLY with the engine running, when the engine note changes thats where the leak is .. (carb cleaner is burnt as extra fuel so engine picks up a tad).. once the leak is fixed wipe down with paper towel .... result .. problem gone and a nice clean engine  :)

Cheers Entwood,
That sounds nice and easy....... but do you mean that I should spray it round the air intake? And are there any parts of the engine that it will damage........And what do I use to seal the leak?
Hope I don't sound too thick but want to be on the safe side.
Thanks mate,
K

Spray it lightly around each component/connection .. it won't do any harm at all. Once you know where the leak is, you know which bits to take off to check... seals for splits or not seating properly, pipes for splits. No point in taking the whole plenum off if it just a split vac pipe at the back !!!  Leaks should be fixed by replacing witha serviceable parts .. NOT by use of gash sealants/glues .. IMHO
