changing crank sensor
« on: 05 August 2009, 22:23:49 »

I ordered one today after having problems revving over 3500 which even more confirmed my previous suspicions. I went to overtake someone doing 40 in a 60 zone and instead of flying past them I gently cruised past at about 45! It was incredibly embarrasing, not to mention potentially dangerous.

My question is, when I remove the old crank sensor will I lose any oil?

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

No. The sensor is at the same height as the crankshaft. The oil is several inches lower in the sump.

The sensor is retained by a single torx headed bolt. The cable has some aluminium sleeving on it to try and protect it from the heat from the exhaust manifold. The worst part of the job is trying to route the cable up behind the engine.

I do wonder whether the heat isn't a factor in the sensor failures. I tried very hard to keep the cable away from the manifold.

Tis often recommended to reroute the sensor wire away from the hot oil pipes, when replacing. :y

When you disconnect the plug at the rear of the engine tie a long length of string around the plug . pull the cable out from the bottom of the engine. tke off the old sensor , tie the plug from the new sensor to the string and pull the string back up through the rear of the engine the cable should follow the same route as the original with a bit of gentle persuasion. hope this helps. :y

DO NOT route the cable the same as the original. It is only assembled that way so that the complete engine can be placed in the car during production.Modern production methods wouldnt allow for fitting the sensor after the engine is in the car.
Route the cable over to n/s inner wing and up behind the brake pipes,it can then join to the connecter near to the rear of the n/s camcovers, the wire/connector at the top is long enough to accomadate this.
There is a guide somewhere on the site which shows how to do this, takes no more then 10 minutes.
No point removing the old sensor, just leave it in place. If it hasnt completely failed it could if need be,be used as an emergency "get you home"if your new sensor failed at some point in the future. :y

Thanks guys.

I will be routing the new wire away from heat where possible.
