spongy brakes and dodgy dash on 2.6 CD 2001
« on: 14 August 2009, 17:02:47 »

I purchased my first Omega yesterday evening.  Overrall I am pleased, however the Brakes feel spongy.  I have to push them down quite hard before the car starts slowing down.  I have heard Omega brakes brake progressively, but it is somewhat disconcerting when the 5 series I have been driving responds immediately to the touch of the brake.

Furthermore the dashboard illumination, when its bright from the left handside with the rev counter, speedometer, but the illumination start fading at 100 mph mark and is gone completely with fuel level indicator.  Is this how it is designed or is it a fault?

I have a 2001 Y plate 2.6 V6 CD with 83K on the clock.  Any advice would be appreciated for this forum noobie    :)

When were the discs and pads last changed? Also how old is the brake fluid? If you intend on keeping it a while, fit some new GM discs (£80 on trade club) and they come with free pads.

As for the dash, a bulb has blown, its easy to get the dash out, and replace it. See maint section for the guide

Omega's (not sure if all or just facelift) do have progressive braking and can feel a little "spongy" when you first drive one. When I first got my current Omega I thought the same thing. However, still worth getting them checked if it's causing you concern.

Sounds like some of your dash bulbs have gone. I'm pretty sure they're replaceable but no doubt someone else will confirm.

Checking the documentation, brake fluid changes in service august last year.  Last MOT was a few weeks ago and the rear brake pads were changed.  I will get these checked out (i'm putting it in for a service)

How much would a garage charge to change a bulb in the dash?

Thanks for your responses gents.

Maybe I'll give it a go.  How do I know if my car requires 286mm or 296mm brake discs?

again thanks for all your help.

Your car has the bigger discs, all but the very early 4 pots have them.  :y  :y
