Cooling Fan
« on: 23 August 2009, 17:03:52 »

Hi all,  ;) my cooling fan? (one directly in front of the engine) is running constantly, even with the ignition off & key removed? I have had to disconnect the  plug on the fan motor to stop the battery going flat. The other fan (in front of the radiator) which I presume is for the air con? cuts in at about 97 on the temp gauge and runs really fast until the temp drops to 90 & then cuts out, but when I run the air con on 'auto' the fan starts & stops constantly and a relay in the box next to the battery clicks like mad! Any ideas would be very gratefully received  :y Kind regards, Phil.

Sounds like one of the relays in the box by the battery has failed, or the thermostatis switch in the radiator. (just under the top hose IIRC)

Unplug the thermo switch and see if the fan stops. If it does the switch is your issue. If not we'll have to look into which relay it might be.

In that case, my guess is relay K26, K67 or K87.

Have a look here and see which of the above stops the fan when pulled one at a time.

Hi again Kevin  8-) Sorry it took so long to reply - I couldn't get in the door because my smile was so wide LOL. My fusebox has a slightly different layout to the ones shown, but the relevent fuses you pointed out were all there in the right place :y
Here's what happened:-(1) plugged in the fan- Started with K67, dark blue relay - I barely touched it & the fan stopped!
(2) Started engine, turned on A/C to LO - both fans started to run continuously at speed with NO relay clicking!!!  :D
(3) Turned A/C off - both fans stopped running.
(4) Ran engine up to 93, cooling fan started as normal!, temp dropped to 87, fan stopped  ;D
Did it all again and everything is back to normal!!!  :) ;) :D ;D 8-) ::) :y
Thank you sooo much mate, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help, and that of all the other blokes on here who have helped in the past  :y
Kevin, if I am lucky enough to meet you or any of the other guys in the future I reckon you are all due some serious beer tokens!  I am going to sleep soundly tonight! Kindest regards, Phil.  :y :y :y

Glad to hear it's resolved. Keep an eye on that relay (might be worth getting a spare lined up) because I wouldn't be at all surprised if it sticks again.
