70k service
« on: 24 August 2009, 00:38:21 »

OK, my 70k service is due next month. So far it has been fully main dealer serviced every 12 months and had the cam belt done at 40k in Dec 2006.

Is 40k intervals still the suggested change point or do I give myself peace of mind and get it done now, given the cost of a snapped belt! (also looking for a good excuse to do the cams!!).

I presume that otherwise the 70k would be a very small service.

40k/4yrs, whichever soonest.  Obviously no harm in doing sooner.

I'd certainly change the oil more regularly than the stated 10k, and the coolant annually (if blue) or every 2 years (if red).  Fuel filter is stated as every 2 years, but I tend to do annually, same with air filter and pollen filter.

Brakes - I check pads regularly (visually, not relying on dash warnings) and change fluid annually (sometimes more often ::)).

If auto, gearbox oil worth considering at 70k (Vauxhall say its sealed for life, but it has to work hard), though mine didn't get done until 150k  :-[ (but fluid was in good condition still).

Cheers.

Will tot up if I can justify the cam change this year or next and do the belt accordingly.

Oil has always been Mobil1 at annual and always run out as clean as it went in and never used a drop.

See, I'd use a cheaper quality oil, such a GM's own, and change more regular ;)

nervous twitch type aversion to manufacturer's ownbrand oil - costs a bomb and comes from who knows where.

If a 70k can run on 0W40 with no leaks and not using any that I will stick with that, why put thicker than necessary in? Only slows the turn-over, causes more friction, worsens economy ...

Thanks for the help though.

How's about £35 for 4 x 5 litre containers on Trade Club? ...... however you're more than welcome to pay for names!  ;) ;) ;)

Vx is Fuchs oil apparently  :y

plus they KNOW it has to last at least a year, cos thats when they will see the car again.

I'd trust a car manufacturers oil over another any day.

GM's own semi synth oil is some of the cheapest I know on tradeclub (less than £10 per 5l can).  At that price, I'll happily change it every 3k or so (about when it changes from clear to light brown, ie if I can see the oil on the dipstick, its due for change!), which will do the engine a whole heap more good that a fully synth oil changed every 10k ;)

Added to that, GM oil is a quality oil supplied by Fuchs.

For the past 70k miles (ie, in my ownership), my MV6 has had this 3k oil change, and it's probably the sweetest Omega engine I have driven (and I get to drive a lot of Omegas), despite its 160k miles and 11yrs (and hard life ::))

Obviously, everyone has different ideas about servicing, so I can only advise what I would recommend, and what I personally do to my own cars :)

Personal obversation of replacing the oem stuff with Mobil1  when the car hit about 20k was night and day - quicker turnover (less strain on starter mota), +1mpg immediately and pulls quicker through the revs.

Strange - I came up with the same barrage of comments when I was on the VW forums last year - I guess everybody blindly puts the factory oil in. Funny thing is that the missus' polo (the car with a hole in the middle) just come back from service and the dealer there is now using Mobil1 ;D

Thanks for the comments.

A lot of dealers use Mobil 1 fully synth oil - most modern cars spec fully synth to cope with the stupid 20k service intervals, and mobil 1 is one of the most cost effective (at trade).

If you are leaving it 20k though, thats massively way, way, way, way too long.  I'd never use a fully synth oil beyond 6-7k :o

Imagine a tractor getting 20k-interval oil changes .....
Synthetic or not, Vx's own-brand 10/40 semi synth for mine every time lads!
