Insurance Rant.....sorry
« on: 05 December 2007, 21:11:18 »

Anyone use A Quote for your insurance?

Well the insurance on my bike was up for renewal mid september.

However weeks before the policy expired I saw direct debits for irregular amounts on my bank statements.

A phone call later revealed that A Quote had created them for a new policy.

What new policy? ? ? ?

After much aggro I got 1/2 my money back.....even more aggro before I got the rest.

I clearly told A Quote that unless they can use another firm for monthly installments other than Premium Credit Limited (PCL) then I'll go elsewhere. I was told PCL is/was the only choice. I said in that case do not renew my insurance.

Roll on to the end of september. I get a phone call out of the blue inviting me to take up a special one off finance agreement direct with A Quote. I was told just wait until you get the pro-forma 'we will cancel your policy if you dont pay' letter, thats my signal to pay a monthly payment over the phone. I think the call was on a Friday. The following Monday I found out my job would more than likely be changing in a month or two which would reduce my premium and also some speeding points would drop off my licence. So I wouldnt renew insurance until the New Year.

I wrote to A Quote that Monday clearly stating I have changed my mind and do not want to go ahead with any insurance. I never did get any documents and to date all I have got and keep getting is threatening letter's about baliffs and courts etc.

I have told A Quote everyway possible that I do not want their insurance. I have written, e-mailed and telephoned. I have consulted the FSA (Finance regulators) and if a person is sold a financial agreement (this includes insurance) over the telephone they have 14 days to change their mind without penalty.

I still cant believe that nealry 3 months on I'm still no closer to sorting this mess out.

I have followed the instructions by Trading Standards, Consumer Direct, CAB, FSA and the Financial Ombudsman and yet it is  still going on!!!!!!!!!!!!

PLEASE DO NOT USE A QUOTE INSURANCE BROKERS AND/OR PREMIUM CREDIT LIMITED.
YOU WILL PROBABLY REGRET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other year I told Hastings in Dec NOT to renew my wifes policy the following month. Needless to say they carried on & took payment from my account. The idiot I spoke to just couldn't undersatnd what the problem was, and suggested I should have cancelled the policy when I'd phoned in the Dec. She couldn't understand that I didn't need to cancel anything then .... I just didn't want to re-insure! Just be very aware of the increasing policy of 'continuance renewal' ie you get a letter just before expiry saying that you need do nothing to stay insured.
Guess who doesn't get any of my business anymore?  >:(

I insured the car with Direct Line a few years ago, paid by credit card, then a few days later got a better deal from Tesco. Direct Line refunded the payment in full under the 'change of heart' clause (well it did take a couple of months).

Tesco send me a letter every year saying I should call them to renew. As I pay by credit card, not direct debit, they can't renew it anyway unless I call them.

So I had no real problems so far... :-?

Just be wary that you haven't signed up to a "continuous credit" agreement whrerby they can take annual payments from your credit cards ad infinitum without further confirmation and there's damn all you can do to stop it!

I'll let you know when I get my statement next month, but I don't think I left Hastings in any doubt about how I felt. ::)

No chance on mine, the Credit Card company replaces it every few months due to fraud, so I get new number every time.... which is a bit of a pain because I have to notify Sky etc.

Mrs TheBoy had hassle renewing her insurance a couple of weeks back.  It was the day before it was due, and she wanted to cancel the breakdown cover part. "Sorry, Mrs TB, but you cannot make changes once the policy has started". "But it doesn't start until midnight tonight!". "Sorry, Mrs TB, but you can't make changes once policy has started".  "But it hasn't yet!". "Sorry, Mrs TB..". "Up yours!"

So we can assume that Mrs TB now has a different car insurance provider!  ;)  ;D

Last year Mrs jimbob's renewal comes out

I get a quote from Direct line, from website instead of renewal
£150 cheaper!  ring em to see why, dunno, and we cant change it
so we dont renew, take out 'new' policy and quids in!

Funnily enough, I had the opposite problem a couple of years ago.

Had a letter in the post saying something along the lines of 'If you wish to cancel, please phone us, if you wish to renew, do nothing and we will automatically debit the amount from your account'.

Being lazy, and travelling round the country with work, I thought, easy, do nothing and it will renew.

Six months later when looking for the paperwork to get some new road fund licence, I can't find the Insurance Certificate anywhere. This happened at the end of December, couldn't manage to get hold of Customer Services for three days, eventually they tell me it wasn't renewed, and can't give a reason why.

I point out that this means I've been driving round uninsured for six months, what do they propose to do about that, they offer to put me through to Sales so that I can buy some straight away. I didn't bother.
