Hi guys
          I seem not to be able to obtain TDC, needed to change front crankshaft oil seal, found timing gear stripped, ok replace that and of course set as describle cams on 1234 crankshaft pointing to the bottom belt tighten, when i went to turn over on starter the car gives no compression, just like turning car over with no sparks plugs, took apart again!!! including covers, checked to see if out by 180 degress possible on exhurst valves not inlet but not able to tell with valves, both inlet valves should be open on the rock is this right :-/, markings correct on cam and crank, i take it that no1 piston is on the right above the tensioner for the fan belt facing the engine  :-/ :-/
  Whats the best way to set this up guys without causing damage.  cheers  :)

did you by any chance undo the crank bolt without locking the pulley ::)

Cylinder 1 is on the left when facing the engine (nearest to the air filter).
Best way i know of to find tdc is to remove no 1 spark plug put a sutable rod ie screwdriver, extention bar etc into plug hole and turn crank slowly by hand when rod is at highest point thats tdc.

you need to use a proper locking kit, then you don't need to know where TDC is.  ;)  :y

The timing gear & front pulley locates on the crank by a woodruf key and it only fits in one position, then you have the TDC mark on the pulley, surely?  :-/

Unless the key was broken when removing, as implied by Sir Drink-a-lot.

I agree that you can find it by feeling through a cylinder hole (or ideally a DTI and an extension down to the piston) but in this case the markings should be accurate.

HI Guys
            thanks for the replys, but still unable to fire, yes i timed up using cam locking kit but to undo the bolt i poistioned crank in tdc then just went in to undo, replaced seal, checked crank aginest cut out on oil pump and cam marks using kit, belt off, right for 5th time took apart including cam covers, should valves on no1 pistioned should be the same on 3 and 5, 3 is of course is the same camshaft all closed, when i was turning over on the key it will not fire as their were no spark plugs in, maybe in exhurst? stroke  but all markings spot on  :-? :-? replaced crank sencer, fine spark at plugs  :( :( HELP!!!  Its becoming a pig!!
  Im getting quicker at taking the top of  ;D ;D look forward to hearing from you guys
