2002 CDX 2.6 V6 - Have I made a bad choice?
« on: 02 October 2009, 17:10:09 »

Hi,
I've just bought a 2002 CDX 2.6 V6 as I have always admired the Omega for it's classy looks.I'm retired from work now and on a tight budget but this looked like an ideal chance to get myself an Omega. The car was on eBay and the chap selling it wanted to get it off his hands as it has a
problem with a leaking camshaft.Apparently one of the four seals needs replacing. The chap had been using it for his daily commute to Gatwick from his home in south London. He
has just been making sure that he tops up the oil on a weekly basis. The mileage is just over the 112000 mark and the car is in very good condition generally speaking, just a couple of dings and a scrape to the rear n/s bumper. All the electrics work without exception and the car drives absolutely beautifully.I know nothing about car mechanics and have booked the car into a local garage(not Vauxhall)
in order to have any necessary work carried out.I really want to hang on to this car and would hate to have to admit that I've made a mistake in buying it in the first place
so my question to anybody in the know is.Is having this fault
fixed going to cost me an arm and a leg and can anyone give me a rough idea of how much cost I'm looking at?
Many thanks,Downeman.

I would say it will probably be around the 600 quid mark.  :'(
Although the seals themselves are around a tenner each, fitting them requires removal of the timing belt and cam gears, then refitting and re-timing, which is rather time consuming!
I'm sure there are some folks on here that will be able to do it for you for a lot less than that though  :y

Cam cover gaskets - lots of people on here could do it.

About £60 in parts

What seal is actually leaking, the front cam seal behind the cam belt cover or the cam shaft covers on the top of the engine. if the cam covers are leaking then depending on the labour rate the garage charges anything between £100/150. if the cam shaft seals are leaking then who knows.  ::)
Be warned that if the cam seals are leaking then the timing belt and rollers will need to be replaced as it is fairly likly that oil will have contaminated the toothed belt.
