Few issues need help with...
« on: 11 October 2009, 20:58:03 »

Hi,

just have a few issues I could do with some help with. My father-in-law drivers an '99 Elite 3.0, bodywork like new, very well cared for and he has a few niggles that have cropped up.

1 - Cruise control works but then cancels when he signals. Any ideas what could cause this?

2 - Headlight O/S has condensation, it has been replaced with a new unit and now this has done the same. Ive recommended checking any seals and water runways are clear but havent looked yet. Is there any other reason and is it common as my Omega had that problem.

3 - The lights behind buttons such as Aircon and the other (forgot what he said it was) has stopped working. Is this as bulb? He has been told the whole dash needs to come out to replace it but would rather not do this. What needs replacing and how easy is it?

4 - He was told he need an output revolutions sensor, which we got for him, how easy is this to replace?

Many thanks in advance, any help much appreciated.

Thanks

1) Could be stalk, but would need further investigation. Check stalk wiring for damage first

2) GM released a note about this - if the condensation clears within 20mins with lights on, its not classed as a fault :o

3) Bulbs. Guide to replacing in Maintenence Guides section

4) Crank sensor? Dead easy, but don't follow original route (which is flawed). Again, I believe there is a guide in Maintenence Guides section

Exactly.  But I guess they were getting too many warranty returns ;D

None of mine (3) have ever suffered it, so I don't think its a common thing. But yours is not the first I've heard of.

Well as its happened to 2 units, could something else have caused it? Way I see it, water must be getting around it o seep it and as they are sealed units, it must be around where the bulb goes in but the water 'runways' should ensure most water doesnt get close...shouldnt it?

Found the control panel removal, and where the crank sensor it...how easy is it to replace?

Right so the crank sensor cant be disconnected?

Got this part:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360178533373&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

to get back on road, thought any connections would just come off and 'plug' into this one?

That`s not a crank sensor. Why were you told that part was needed. Do the paperclip test and see if you have any codes

Ive think he said the gears are not changing when they should, no gear changes unil`very high revving compared to normal. A mechanic he asked told him this part was needed but he hasnt had the time to fit it.

Thought it was stange if it was meant to sit on or side of the box and im being directed to crank! lol

Just not sure what you would call this part but it matched what the mechanic said.

Does this make sense at all?

Have you had any fault message come up on the MID re; autobox fault. Symptons could possibly be TSOSS but would need a code reader for the autobox ecu to confirm.

Sport mode isn`t stuck on is it :-/ :D

If you fill in your profile, location etc may be somewhere near with a reader :y

If you want to substitute the sensor, easy enough.Jack up front and support, rear of gearbox above and left of prop, remove connector, remove retaining bolt but advise renewing sealing ring

Right, don't let him spend another penny until someone has properly diagnosed the issue.

If the gearbox is mibehaving, this needs to have its code read with a decent reader.  If there is a code 08 Incorrect Gear Ratio, thats normally a sign that the gearbox has had it.

Also the gearbox will hold first gear for a long time when the engine is cold, this is to warm up the cats.
