Help with remote infor
« on: 24 October 2009, 19:48:27 »

Hi gang,
Have a 1996 (N) reg diseasel, GLS spec, which has the solid key (with a chip in for immobiliser) and a seperate 2 button remote for C/L & alarm.
Have only ever had one key/fob, and decided to see if I can get another set. Got the key, cut and coded OK but am now unsure as to how to get a second fob.
Is it possible to get a 2nd hand one from Egay, and reprogram??
Or do I need to shell out for a new one and still get it programmed??
Also, how are the fobs programmed?? My key was done at the local locksmiths when cut, but am sure I read somewhere that fobs need a tech II session to do??
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!  :y

Cheers, Dodger

Just been through a similar thing, see electrical section.

I think, in your situation, it may not be all that straightforward/cheap.

I think it isn't so much that the fob is programmed to suit the car, but the other way round (no way that I can see of getting any info into the fob, after original programming during manufacture).  So I think you'd need both fobs to have the same code.

This may well be do-able via Vx (not sure whether they can order a new fob to 'match' an existing one), but not Ebay.   Or you may have to try to get two new fobs with the same code, from Vx. ??

I'll be interested to see if what I've just said makes sense to any experts out there, or whether it's nonsense!  :)

Hi
You are right to an extent, I believe the car is programmed to suit the code on the fob, but I also believe that the car can be programmed to more than one fob code.  That is the two fobs probably do not need the same code.
Also be careful about buying fobs elsewhere than Vx.  I went down the Vx route and even they ordered in the wrong fob initially.  It looked the same as my original, but did not have the same functionality.  I got my "car pass" from them at the same time, so they should have known which fob type my car required.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.
