Sludge under filler cap on a 3.2
« on: 26 October 2009, 20:28:52 »

Been to look at a 3.2 mv6 today that a friend of a friend is selling, in the whole the car is mint with just over 60K on the clock. Only problem is there is a lot of the old creamy sludge in the rocker cover, the car runs fine and doesn't seem to overheat. Question is is it likely to be the headgasket or just in need of a good engine flush and the breathers etc doing.

very unlikey HG, unless its had very poor coolant and been spanked everywhere.

Mayo under the cap is caused by crap oil (Castrol is good for it) or lots of short runs.

As long as there is no smell of petrol in the expansion tank, its not loosing coolant, should be fine. Breather clean, few oil changes, and a session of 'drive it like you stole it' should see it good again.

The car has probably not had Vauxhall Oil in it and only done short journey's.
If you have it Get some of Vauxhalls Semi Synthetic 10-40s :y

If it's just been used for mainly short stop/start runs, the buildup of mayonaise is normal. Look in the expansion bottle with the engine on tickover and see if there are any bubbles appearing, also take the cap off and smell the coolant, if you can smell exhaustgases or a petroly smell there may be a prob with the headgasket but a pressure and coolant test would be needed to be absolutely sure.

As said, no great worryer at the moment.  Combination of lesser quality oil, short journeys and an extended oil filler neck whick allows the oil condensate to form mayo under the filler cap as it is exposed to air flow around the engine.

Its a brill bargaining point with a potential seller though.... ;)  Duff headgasdket claim in the offing = potential discount in sale price...... 8-)

the problem has already been reflected in the price but it is a reasonable price and even if needs the headgasket it will be average price
