Well my water pump on the saloon decided to self destruct yesterday.  Emptied all the coolant onto the road (really p*ssed off as only refilled with fresh water and new red antifreeze a couple of weeks back when I changed heater matex  )  Had it recovered back home.

Got more antifreeze and swapped it out this morning with a new GM pump I had in the garage.  The bearing on the old one had collapsed hence the leak.  Straightforward job (although the old one took some hammering to remove), topped up with 5 lits of A/F plus some water.  Had a good burn down the local dual carriageway - no leaks, heater nice and hot and coolant levet ok.

Did you have to remove the cam belt to get the backplate off to get to the water pump?

I knew that it was driven by the auxiliary belt, I was just puzzled by the advice often given to change the pump when the cambelt was off.

Coz once you get to the water pump it would only take another 10 mins to do a cambelt change!!
