Well I can confirm you cannot fit audio controls from a post 1998 steering wheel to a pre 1998 wheel that never had them originally.
The internal body of the steering wheel is different and would require extensive cutting about just to get the audio buttons to sit correctly..you then have the problems of screw fitting them to the wheel and finally the airbag cover is also different.
So conclusion is a no go...pity as the prospect of a wooden irmscher style wheel was quite tempting....I will have to keep looking .
