Hi people I have a strange prob with my 2000 facelift 2.5 v6 miggy's autobox.
She has had the box drained and the filter changed and has had to have the box topped up several times as the box takes a while to engage gear, slips etc.
I have purchased the Dexron6 oil and changed the oil again thinking that the last mech did a crap job using factors ATF, however 6 weeks later the same problem is back. There is a drop in the level in the box but no leaks on my driveway none around the box itself and surrounding areas, please have anyone had this? I am at my wits end as to what the prob may be, and it is spoiling what is a fantastic car. Any help/ suggestions would be very appreciated.  :-/

What year is your car?

Does it have the gearbox oil cooler in the end of the radiator?

There have been reported cases of these failing and contaminating the gearbox with coolant, I suppose it could leak in the other direction?

I don't know how you would check for red ATF in a system filled with red coolant  :-/

Has somebody connected the gearbox breather to the plenum setup by mistake?

Some really interesting theories guys I will check the Rad and the breather pipe as I changed the leads plugs Dis pack ages ago 12 months plus, but  what would this do? Thank you for the speedy response.

Well the autobox is designed to work at atmospheric pressure....if the breather is connected to the plenum then the gearbox now works at a partial vaccum and all the oil vapour gets burnt by the engine.

Seen it a few times...worth ruling out

Wow! that does make sense, I will defiantly check this out as well as the rad, she is a 'w' reg 2000 facelift in magic Grey colour, 114k on the clock my mech says that it should be given a dignified ending but she runs a dream despite this problem and I hate the thought of parting with the car ( its my 4th )

Lol, sounds like your mechanic is not upto the complexity of a mig!

Not convinced on the rad front (sorry) as you would also get water in the auto box due to the coolant remaining pressurised long after the engine stops where as the gearbox oil pressure would drop off pretty quickly.

Not on a 2.5...that puts it as a 2000 model year

Will defo check the vac pipe, I thought I was doing well putting all the pipes back , Is it possible to say where the pipe is connected to if it is mistakingly attached to the plenum? Does it 'hang loose' Parden the pun and is it the diameter of the breather pipes?

It should hang loose at the back.....often gets fitted to no3 position by mistake in place of the fuel cannister purge pipe.....

Thanks to that sort of mechanic, I got our last MIG for next to sod all, fixed it for sod all, and made a very handsome profit........long live the dinosaur that doesn't understand electrickery

That someone was me I checked it this morning topped up the box and drained some of the oil off the engine, next task is a oil and filter change next week on the engine.
