heater
« on: 28 November 2009, 16:34:40 »

Hi I have noticed that my heater in the car doesnt get hot anymore, i know its colder now. I travel about ten miles to work and by the time you get there you can barely feel any heat. some one said you need to flush the water in the system, but not sure why, i did have my oil cooler done a while ago and it was flushed and filled with water and antifreeze. is there anything else that can cause the heating not to work properly, oh and the car normally runs at about 90 on the gadge water temp, but it only gets to about 80 over the ten miles ? any ideas.  ::)

If it's only just showing on the scale after 10 miles, your thermostat is probably faulty. My experience is warm air after about a mile.

Changing the 'stat is fun, don't be tempted to refit the existing 'stat if it looks closed when you remove it.

Changed mine recently and it made a pleasing difference to fuel consumption, especially on short journeys.

I found quite a lot of corrosion on the water transfer tube. Last time I did this job I ended replacing it for the same reason.

There are two o-rings on the water transfer tube and one on the thermostat, make sure you get new ones when you get the thermostat.

My new thermostat had thinner flanges then my old one so the bolts bottomed in the bolt holes and I had to use half a dozen washers under each. If you order a new stat from a dealer I would recommend that you get new bolts too.
