If I take the breather box (behind the 1-3-5 head) off the car, can it be cleaned out internally - is there any advantage in this, rather than the "scrape as much crud out of the opening as possible" method given in Fin's guide?

Never taken one off before, so curious - and, how does it re-seal to the block, is there a gasket?

Might be worth taking it off and cleaning / soaking in petrol for a while if the heads are off anyway.

I recall talk of it being sealed with the same goo as the oil filter cover plate.

Almost correct....its the oil cooler cover  , not sure how much muck you will get out of it though as it has a little rubber flap on the lower opening.

Yep grey goo. Looked at this when doing cam cover seals a couple of weeks ago. Needed alot more dismanteling than i had time for from what i could tell.

Heads off, may as well while your there.

If you get the breather box of the engine you can get the lid off it and completely clean it out.

To do this you need an 8mm spot weld drill bit to drill out the centre weld and then prize the lid off.

When you put it back together you'll some metal fixing compound that is used in body shops to bond panels together and for safty drill out the centre weld and tap out with a 6mm thread.

You will need to leave the breather box in some clamps for 24hr so the compond can cure .

Done this on mine about a year ago and you'll be amazed at the amount of crap inside the housing.

I'm just about to do another one so i'll take some pics this time and post up
