Exhaust Manifold Gasket change
« on: 20 November 2009, 10:04:44 »

1998 (R) Omega Elite 2.5 V6 petrol Auto.
Can anyone tell me how to change the 3 port gasket between the N/S cylinder head and the exhaust manifold?
Just been quoted £175 to do it.
OUCH!

lol, at that price they have never done one before.

It can be done working from below and is easier if the engine is moved over a bit

If they use genuine VX gasket and accept that if they shear off any bolts it is at their responsibility to rectify,I would say it is fair for a competent ?? garage.
From what I understand it is a very unpleasant job with lots of issues with bolts shearing off.

Hmmm, The web pages for the service I got the quote from is very professional and after speaking to him he has said that if it takes longer than the 5 hours quoted for (Vauxhall recommended) he will not charge extra. As it will be done at my home I can monitor the repair anyway.
Reckon it s a good deal?

As long as genuine parts are used (metal layer gaskets!)

£175 for someone else to take liability for breaking bolts and to have all the grief seems a good deal; as stated if the proper gaskets are used  :y

That should not be a problem as I am going to get the genuine parts from the main dealership. I will be getting some spares too just in case of cockups and losses.
I always use the main dealers for all parts as I have had too many problems with the dreaded 'clones' before. More time and money wasted than actually saved! Hard lessons they were too so lesson learned.

Just had my 4pot done, three studs broken and bodged by previous owner, job took five hours and cost: £8 for 10 new VX studs, £12 gasket, £164 labour/misc.  Much more than I expected, but has made a world of difference to the car by making it smoother, quieter and more economical  :y

Half the problem is that too many idiots think they are mechanics due to Mr Haynes and turn out s**t work! When they realise that they have made a total 'dangle berries' they sell it on and start over. Bit like the circle of life really.
Just trust the OOF experts on here and you won't go far wrong. Expensive job? Yeah well that is yet another lesson to learn - Only trust genuine Vauxhall parts because the after market clones will always let you down both by performance, durability and accurate fit. You get loads more life, and do not forget the warranty from the genuine article.
Motto is buy cheap and you must expect problems!
