Missing coolant?
« on: 03 January 2010, 19:57:41 »

Hello all, thought it was time i changed the coolant, all was well until i realised that i only had re filled the system with only 5 litres(approx),i know that my elite holds 9.7 !!!!.
Question is where is the other 4.7 litres going ???.

5 Litres is about right, remember you have not drained the whole system, heater matrix and engine is still full of coolant. (assuming you used rad drain tap)

Have you run the engine since? You need to squeeze all the large hose to manually vent as much air as you can, start the car while keeping an eye on the coolant level and top up as the stat opens. Replace the cap & monitor the level over the next day or two!  :y  :y  :y

and what he ^^^^^ says!  ;)

Thanks guys, i did take her out for a 10 mile run just to see what the level was doing, checked it on my return and did not need to top up.I did use the rad tap so that would explain why, cheers again. :)
Think that i will be checking the mix strenghth over the next week, think it could be a little weak as i only have done the 50/50 on the 5 litres which i have just put in.Should i have just put in a straight 4.5 litres of coolant ?

Yes!  :y  :y  :y Assuming that you drained & flushed till you had clear water in there!

If you drained a 50% mix out & replace that with a 50% mix you shouldn't really be that far out, you could always drop a litre of coolant & put a litre of antifreeze in to be sure ....

I think  :-/  :-/  ;D

The motto of htis story is that it is best to use only raw 100% antifreeze to 50% of the system capacity, which is about what it would be if the Rad Tap was used to drop the coolant, for an initial fillup and then use only the pre-mixed muck for top ups. Do not mix different anti-freeze types though. Some are not compatible with each other.
