Oil Lack Warning
« on: 12 January 2010, 08:01:56 »

I have just bought an 'L' reg Omega and the seller told me about the 'Oil Lack' warning.  Apparently it has been to vauxhall who have said that the sump sensor needs replacing!  Has anyone else had this problem and are the sensors prone to faults.  There is plenty of oil in the engine and it is also getting around the top of the engine by the Oil Filler cap.  Car runs very smooth but for peace of mind is this fairly common? thx :-X

If I were you I would have it looked at and diagnosed by someone you trust. If you were told by the seller that it was a fault it is probably an honest comment. It could well be that the sensor is a problem but have a look and see if any of the wiring to it is damaged first. You will not be the first to have damaged wiring causing problems. I am in the process of changing some of my loom before it starts to cause problems because the wiring is going a little brittle.
Although mine has the sensor too I always use the dipstick to be certain. Not much can go wrong with that I hope.

thanks for the info.  Have checked the dipstick and there is plenty of oil and it is clean too! Car runs very well and doesn't sound like oil is starved!  I will have it checked again but i know some garages can lead down the path and come up with all sorts of 'teeth drying' diagnostics!!

Just get the oil level sensor changed. If the warning goes away, problem solved.  :y

The wiring in the sump will have gone hard. When I replaced my sump, I very easily disturbed the wiring to the sensor & it broke.
Leave it till you next do an oil change.  :y  :y :y

AndyB hit the nail on the head, at least that was where my problem lay which is why I am in the process of a partial underbonnet rewire. Sensor was ok but wiring like a dry stick! Freek knows why it gets so hot under there to harden the wiring insulation? Think I will use silicon insulated if this is going to re-occur.
Is this a common problem for Mig wiring to harden??

The oil cooler is used to cool the oil down to the coolant temperature (say 95 deg). I wouldn't like to guess how hot the oil in the oil pan can get.

My experience of Omega wiring quality has been general positive. My last one had reached 15 years / 200,000 miles without giving me any cause to complain (apart from the wires to the boot lid and big wires to the battery)

SWMBO bought a 1999 Golf last year. I spent 3 days tracing and replacing broken wires and dry solder joints. The VW cable quality does not inspire the same confidence.

I ocaisionally get Oil Lack but never Low Oil or whatever it's supposed to say, usually when oil near fill line on stick. Just keep the level OK, If it was starved I guess the light would blink. Like my old 124 coupe on extreme corners,

As i have said before my 'oil lack' came on, on a French m' way. 80 mph. minor panic. unnecessarily spent €5 on a litre of oil. old fashioned method best. trust the dipstick.
its happened  2/3 times since.
if there's oil in ignore it

Brilliant!! I took the car to a dealer yesterday who stood there and dreid his teeth for a while saying that it could be a number of things....£££££££.

All been very helpful so thanks! I will keep a check on Oil level on Dipstick!  I guess if there is serious lack of oil or oil pressure the red lamp will come on by the clocks!  I think the on-board comp is faulty, but then the car is 15 years old.  Runs peachy tho 8-)

Just keep an eye on the level if the red oil can lights up that means the oil pressure is low and usually means that there will be some possilbly serious damage :y
