Power stering problem
« on: 15 January 2010, 18:13:23 »

Hi everyone,Thought my luck wouldn,t last long, got stuck in the snow last tuesday.Dug myself out after 30 mins, but the steering was not working right, working ok at parking speeds but not at normal driving conditions eg roundabouts, junctions when you ease off the throttle a bit.
Like when I was stuck,I did give it a bit of stick and quite a lot revs trying to rock it  out of the drift,no red lining,or anything as bad as that.
Not yet managed to get it onto ramps yet,so can anybody point me in the right direction of things to look for.

does it steer if the revs are up, but not at idle?

if so could be a tired pump.

have you checked the fuses to make sure it hasnt blown?

yes every now and then, its hydrolic oil, can go weak, if you ok at parking in low rev, but not at speed, other than that could be the fins in the pump its self, or a lose belt.

Problem solved?
Really weird, talking to a few neighbours aboutthe problem with the power steering going u/s,they had both suffered the same thing with their astra and combo van.
They both told me that the engine management system notes that the battery is below par and then shuts down some systems to safeguard the engine etc.
Now I found this hard to beleive, but I charged the battery back up to full charge,it was a little poorly.
On restarting, power steering was faultless again.
Problem solved, these 2 neighbours had no knowledge of each others faults.
If you think this is a little bit far fetched to be true,I don,t you but it is the truth Honest.
On checking the cells in the battery afew of them are below par eg,needs attention.
            Regards Alfie.
