replacing faulty shock on rear of my elite estate, I have replaced the tyre on both rear wheels and will be replacing both shocks. They are currently self levelling.

Do I really need to replace like for like or can I fit a standard shock? I would rather do the like for like option but as this is costing me alot to get it through an mot I'm keeping costs low (but I don't want to cut corners)

This topic crops up very regularly.

If you can get some VX self levelling shocks on Trade Club prices then they work out at approx £150 for the pair. As far as I can ascertain no one has found an alternative supplier for the real thing though we (on the forum) have tried various avenues.

If you go non self levelling then there are various recommended and quite cost effective shockers e.g. KYB. Quite an easy job to do your self too.

There are however a couple of issues if you go down the latter route. Firstly you need to "stop" the self levelling pump working. That can easily be achieved by removing the fuse. On some cars that may stop the rear cigar lighter working apparently. A bigger issue is that the springs on the Elite are softer than on other Omegas. they are designed for use with the self levelling shockers. As far as I am aware this might wear your replacement shockers out quicker than they would on a non self levelling Omega.

My Omega failed its MOT today on one of the rear shocks (and headlamp pattern).......I was quoted £114+vat from local VX

Who did you get quoted from, on here ? pretty please.... 

How easy are these fellas to remove and replace ?

It's not too long a job I think about half an hour if you know what your doing and don't have seized bolts, doing mine when I finally order the parts! pm andyc
or become a Vx trade card holder through Autoballmers? £20 fee for year so I'm told
