Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

Vauxhall say: Automatic transmission oil change is required every 60,000 miles or six years, but only under ‘extreme’ operating conditions i.e. when towing of when using the car as a taxi.

We say: change fluid anyway at 40,000 to 60,000 miles / six years, regardless of operating conditions.

Also, a change of transmission fluid (and either cleaning or replacing the filter) is the first port of call when dealing with ANY sort of automatic transmission problems – you will be surprised how many boxes were revived by this simple measure after having been written-off by main dealers… 

Vauxhall own ATF is quite expensive, you can use any good-brand full-synthetic ATF but it MUST be to Dexron III spec.


Power assisted Steering (PAS) Fluid

There is no scheduled interval for PAS fluid change, but if it needs topping up then the correct fluid is ATF Dexron II. For some reason Vauxhall say that Dexron III should NOT be used for PAS, only Dexron II.

From TIS : Field Remedy 1570

TIS 2000 indicates that the power steering oil specification for Vivaro is
Dexron III. This is now incorrect.
The original fluid was Dexron III  (PN 90 510 269, Cat-No. 19 40 763) which
was used to service certain power steering and automatic transmission fluids
(ATF).
This oil is no longer available so a new version of oil Dexron III has been
specified for the affected ATF (PN 93 160 372, Cat-No. 19 40 712) however
this oil is not compatible with power steering systems and should not be
used for this function because this may result in leakages.
To service the power steering system the oil now specified has reverted back
to Dexron II (PN 90 350 342, Cat-No. 19 40 700).
This should prevent any confusion when trying to select the correct oil for
the correct application.
NOTE: This information is valid for all models except Sintra (partnumber
90 513 486, Cat: 19 40 707) and Astra-G/Zafira/Vectra-C/Signum (partnumber
93 160 458, Cat: 19 40 715).

What I have a problem with however is when somebody says something, admits they "heard" it somewhere, and can't follow it up with definitive proof.

so next time i'll sit still keep quiet and allow you to tell someone to damage their car? i'm quite sure the only definative proof lies in a safe at gm hq or some other cloud of intrege, however this is a very well covered subject that i've quoted on several times and frankly cant be arsed as i know it to be correct.

To be fair to you though your logic is sound it seems to me, and i do wonder what we'll use if dexron 2 or 3 really does become hard to find.

If you read the GM info carefully it seems that they introduced a new Dex III that was found to be incompatible with PAS systems:

I also recall reading (probably somewhere in TIS - more hope of finding a virgin in a brothel than locating it again!) that it was due to incompatibility with hoses or seals.

Whether that would apply to all Dex III products on the market of just that one specific GM product who can tell? In principle the specs are "backward compatible" but given that PAS fluid really doesn't get worked hard anyway, I'd use Dex II if available and avoid risking it. There's no advantage to using a higher spec fuid (apart from having some left over following a gearbox fluid change).
