Air con died
« on: 03 February 2010, 15:59:28 »

I had the air con re-gassed last summer and recently the clutch has disengaged and the fans don't turn any more.  I was under the bonnet when it stopped so no works caused it.

Any pointers to where to start?  Heated rear window works so F14 sounds OK.

try checking the plug underneath the compesser, sometimes it gets corroaded as its underneath and gets full of muck.
jack car up and its on the bottom of the compresser two pin jobby.

If the refrigerant-gas pressure is insufficient, I think the low pressure run switch stops the compressor-clutch engaging and fans working......with the same effect if the L.P switch became disconnected or is faulty.

So, my first thought would be gas loss (again) :'(

Thanks.  I will check the compressor connection although that probably wouldn't stop the fans.

Will try to find the pressure switches and buzz them.  Any pointers to where they are?

sensor connected to the silver pipes. the thicker pipe is low pressure gas returning to the compressor, the thiner pipe is high pressure liquid.
should be on the low pressure (thick pipe) somwhere between the bulkhead and the comp.
will be a cylindrical plastic piece joined to that pipe, with a connector going on to it.

i think sounds like low gas pressure tho.

It might just be low temperature. The handbook states that the air con is disabled under a certain outside temperature (5 degrees C?).

Having said that, mine is still running, but other climate versions might disable it. :-/

TBH, if you're going to get it regassed it's better to do it in warmer weather as it's easier to purge moisture out when the system is vacc'ed out, so probably not worth worrying about it now.   I would find the pressure switch and buzz out the low pressure contacts, though, just to see if that is the problem.
