Is there no way of checking the coolant temperature remotely I have a hand held probe which you direct at the item to check temperature but where would you direct it , a hose will be a lot cooler outside than inside maybe you could get it on the transfer pipe that leaves the thermostat. Cant you also check the function of the thermostat by running from cold and feeling the top hose to see if you get a sudden rise in temp when the thermostat opens.

Another thought is there a mileage guide on how long thermostats last before giving up the ghost or is it random

On my recently aquired V6 2003 I suspected an open thermostat as the max temp was 75 however if I switch off heater etc I get 90 , Is this why several posts claim a low running temp.
