Cleaning turbo ?
« on: 06 February 2010, 12:54:58 »

Am I being silly or can the turbo be cleaned. Yesterday I cleaned the EGR and as much of the air manfold as was posable while it was still conected(probably not one of my best ideas but never the les I did). ow all this muck I am assuming would have come through the turbo itself, to me that means that ther must be years of muck in there as wall. Never owned or worked on turbos before I am looking for advice on as the title says on cleaning this turbo.

I have looked through the guides and found only info on the EGR so dose that mean that the task I want to try and do is not posable. I wish I had asked sethsmate yesterday about it but didnt realise how bad the state of the inside of the engine was.

Glad to help buddy!

No need to touch the turbo, just clean out the charge-air pipe ("Turbo Diesel") and the EGR valve inlet at each 2.5k oil/filter-change as I explained yesterday, and it should be fine. The root-cause of the crud build-up is oil mist from the turbo. You also need to check/change the air filter as necessary.

Re-fit that wiring harness clip, and give the complete engine bay area a damn good cleaning. All that's required here on your tractor is some good ol' TLC!

if its never been done i would advocate removing and cleaning out the intercooler, as its the lowest point in the intake and when the motor cools down the oil natuarally returns to the i.c.!! some have a lot some have very little in them, half a bottle of degreaser in it and a good shake around will clear most of the gunge from it, this with the inlet being cleaned does make a difference to the way they run\\\\\\\\\11
on the turbo as it blows at just over 1 baR most of the oil mist is blown up into the i.c. and the inlet pipes, it cannot stay in the turbo so no need to worry about trying to clean it!!!

I know im sounding daft but need to ask, is the I.C the rad like item under inner wing on drivers side, if so will it come out easy or is ther some trick/ particuler method of removing. I might have made a booboo though as removed the big pipe that enters the plastice part acros front,(hope you know what I mean) and thought , thats an odd way of secuaring the hoseclip and put it back with easy acsses from top if removed the airbox first.

Yes, the intercooler's just forward of the O/S/F wheel-arch liner.

Undo the jubilee clip on it's inlet hose (from the turbo), and see if there's any significant oil build-up inside. As this is the lowest point, a peep inside will give you a good indication of any deposits.

I'm pretty sure that the front bumper assembly has to be removed to access the intercooler fan wiring connector and top mounting.
Can anyone confirm?

no need to remove bumper, there are only couple f bolts hold it on but one is hidden until you loosen the wheelarch liner and push it towards the wheel, easy job once you have done it once!!!
engine cutting out wont be thr ic, but could be the fuel heater loose where you replaced the filter?
