another timeing belt issue???
« on: 18 February 2010, 12:43:14 »

Just got a new Timing Belt Kit from Main Dealers and there is some important differences with relation to the video :-? 1st is the No's on the pulley carrier bracket for the later one should be 01 this one has 6B,then the belt itself has no timeing markers or directional arrow :'( :'( so it looks like I will have to pick up the markers from the original and also count the teeth. :( The kit partno on the box is 93172354.The No on the belt is 9 128 500*39.The * represents I think a possible makers logo.Is there any kind parts expert one who can please check that I have in fact got the correct GM kit, with special attention to the pulley carrier haveing No 6B as apposed to 01.Thanks and best regards to All :y :y

I have never changed a 3.2/2.6 kit but I am pretty sure that the pulley on the right is non adjustable and you need to route the belt on from the crank anticlockwise.

Others will comment on your questions no doubt.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago and 6B is the correct one for the later cars. The genuine vauxhall belts don't have the timing marks on them anymore so just make sure you fit the belt so you can read the numbers ie the correct way round

the lack of timing marks is no problem - no need to count teeth: just make sure the belt is tight when you fit it.   you may struggle to get the right hand run of the belt from cam to crank tight, in which case back the crank off by about 5,10 degrees, get the belt on and then move the crank back: makes life easier

As to the carrier, compare with the one you take off, if it is 6B then fine, else you've got the wrong one

Agreed. The lack of markings is not a problem once you have the feel for how far back the crank has to go.

I tend to work the belt on from the crank pulley up to cams 3 and 4 with the crank turned back a tooth, then turn the crank to TDC, tightening the right hand run of the belt, then over the centre pulley to cams 1 and 2 and ease it onto the tensioner. As long as you don't get excessive slack in the belt between pullies it will be correctly timed, although transferring some markings onto the belt can be useful to double check.

The main issue I've found is that it's easy to get an extra tooth on the run from crank pulley to cam 4.

Thanks all for a quick response and good advice. :ySeems I'm ok with this kit Pete,I really did need some assurance which you kindly gave me.I'm going down to the Dealers for the stat parts later today as info I picked up off this great Forum last week is stat needs replacement. Coolant temp never seems to get over 60 these days and is possibly jammed open, might as well lump this job in as well,I should't be too bad with the belt job Kevin as I did one on my MV6 in my pre Forum days wont tell you how long it took ::) allthough I found a leaky oil cooler and had to sort that as well. Coolant had been trickling down slowly into the timing belt case.So I'll see how it goes this time sure feel more confident. I'm in the Forum :y :y
