How to read ECU Fault Codes
« on: 16 February 2010, 22:32:53 »

Hi Guys

I found this site on How to read ECU fault codes from some GM cars.

Can someoen tell me if this is any good and if so is it up todate etc?

http://everything2.com/title/How+to+read+ECU+fault+codes+from+some+GM+cars

I don't have a fault but thought if it is a good site and helpful one, then maybe it will help someone on this forum.

OOF has always recommended reading codes - referred to as "paperclip it"

You're a bit tardy mate!!  :-? :-? ;)

Other methods for reading/resetting codes - poor mans tech2 (opelcom), rich mans tech2 (proper tech2).  Lots of poor mans tech 2s on here, also 4 real tech2s!!

I don't believe I am (if you were refering to me ref being a bit tardy mate)
I have browsed this site well before posting anything on it.
I believe that a person can never have enough info at their back and call.
Did you go to the link and read the entire page? Did you also see other helpful links at the base of that site?

As I say everyone is entitled to their own opinion, maybe the site is helpful to others and not you, so be it eh....mate :y

Ok Murphy's Law here

Result of paper clip test
Did a paper clip test and came up with the following

12

13
13
13

12
12
12

13
13
13

12
12
12

Hope i've posted those codes properly, apologises if I've not.
Code reading gave me:-

Oxygen sensor - open cicuit

Now my questions are, how do I fix this fault?
Car is for MOT next Thursday, would this be a failure in the MOT? Where is this senor located and how is it removed and replaced? What tools will I need?

Thanking you in advance

I agree, always good to have lots of info. That said, I think the guide on this site is better.  If you can think of a way to improve it, please let Jimbob or myself know :y :y :y

Not entirely sure where the lamda is on a 2.0 8v (rare over here), but will be on the exhaust downpipe somewhere, before the cat. Check the wiring to it.  If that is not working properly, its likely you will fail on emissions.

Yes I did.  As said above the guides on OOF are far better.  :y

Actually, there are some massive inaccuracies in that link.  The author has made some assumptions based on older cars that simply aren't valid on the Omega.  I would not attempt to short out other pins on Omega (each pin has multiple systems attached anyway, so it wouldn't work). I'd be wary shorting out pins not designed to have that done ;)

As for disconnecting ECU to clear codes - Motronic ones or DDE ones, this won't work - codes stored in non volatile memory.

As for ign on and off 25 times - incorrect. Some codes need 20 'clean starts'. Some need a code reader to clear.

I'd recommend Omega owners use our guide instead - its accurate, and dedicated to Omegas, with no assumptions made from what happens on older Vauxhalls.

Theboy,
Thank you for going through that site and coming back with a proper evaluation.
I have now deleted the link from my computer.

Can you tell me please where the link is for fault codes for a 2.0 8V on this forum? Does 2.2 petrol cover the 2.0 petrol?

I did find the following but not for 2.0
Fault codes can be found below.

2.2 Petrol

I found the Lambda sensor attached to the exhaust pipe and replaced it this morning. Did another paper clip test and no faults are showing.

Thanks to everyone for help and advice. :y

The 2.5/3.0 should be near enough, but post up the codes you have, and someone will confirm :y
