2.2 facelift petrol auto gearbox problem

a good mate of mine is having a bit of fun with his gearbox.
he has a rattle which seems to be coming from the gearbox area  :-/
the box is working ok so he is looking at the torque convertor  :-/
anybody had this problem before ?
what box is fitted to the 2.2 petrol.  ar25 ??
has anybody got a decient gearbox / torque convertor for sale ?

sure the rattle is not from the flexi / exhausts / cat?

that was his first idea so he has had the manifold / cats off to check  :y
definetly the gearbox area  :(

not too his knowledge  :-/
he bought the car off a customer so he has no history of the car other then what he has none to it.
my mate is a vx trained mechanic ( just started his own business )
he is pretty sure its the torque convertor but has never known one to rattle like this before it goes so asked me to ask you lads  :y

have known one to whine, but not rattle. It was not fully pushed back in the bell housing

Might be worth checking is any debris has got stuck in that area, and isn't dropping out on its own...

The torque converter does rattle if the plates inside fall apart, (come detached, generally knackered).

Had this happened to one of the fork lift truck gearboxes at work, sounded like a bag of nails with no drive in one direction.


I remember that Barlow Material Handling wanted 3k to rebuild the gearbox, we spent a few hundred quid sending out the torque converter to be refurbished.

They cut the weld around the outside diameter and the plates inside were mangled somewhat as one had broke loose.

he has checked the torque convertor bolts ( nice and tight ) so he is going to pull the box off over the weekend to see if they is any bits floating around in there  :y

he's fixed it  :y
turned out that the last muppet that worked on the box had never tightened some of the flywheel bolts properly and 2 of the bolts had sheared off and was rattleing away in there  >:(
