How does the bottom of passenger door get wet?
« on: 01 March 2010, 13:58:17 »

Hi,

I have a pre-facelift Omega Elite estate (BMW 2.5 TD) and I've had various wet passenger foot well problems. I'm pretty sure we've managed to sort them out - just waiting for everything to dry out now.

However, the carpet on the underside of the passenger door is still wet, and I can't figure out how the water's getting there! We've had the door card off and it's dry inside. It's dry all along the sides of the door, too.

Any ideas?

So, the scuttle drain is not blocked?

No, we cleared the scuttle drain and the drains for the sunroof. The footwell is dry, it's just the carpet at the bottom of the passenger door!

Possibly missing or damaged door membrane. or possibly getting in around the door mirror seal to the door.

The membrane is definitely there and OK as we've had the door card taken off to repair the door handle. Inside the door was dry then, although the footwell was very wet.

Wouldn't the inside of the door be wet if it was getting in around the door mirror seal? Or is the bottom of the door a separate 'compartment' from the rest of the inside of the door?

I would take door card off, sit inside while someone sprays a hose at the car and see if you can see it coming in.
On mine the door card material never seemed wet, just the carpet at the bottom of the door card.

My membrane had a tear in it.

Also I tried to view like a wet towel on a washing line, any moisture ends up that bottom, assuming no wind to dry it evenly.
With the door card there is very little air flow on the inside to dry it so water ends up at the bottom.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks Mantahatch, that's a good idea, although I'm not completely happy about putting more water into the door, as you can imagine.

It's interesting that the door card can be dry, but the carpet at the bottom is wet. I have been assuming that the water was coming in and going straight to the bottom of the door, but the 'wet towel' effect seems more likely, now that you mention it.

I suppose we'll have to have the door card off again :(

Perhaps I am not explaining myself very well. Take door card off, one person sit inside, close door, close window if open, other person spray outside of car with water, hopefully you can see it coming in.

Sorry I seam to have a habit of not explaining things to well, I no what I want to say, but putting them into words is not easy.

It has got me into trouble once or twice on here. But hopefully most people forgive me.

Once you have done that 2 or 3 times, you will think nothing of it, just as easy as checking the oil I find.  :y
