sealant for thermosat

Should I use some sealant when replacing thermostat? Could be ok the black sealant used for rocker cover?

It has an O ring to provide the seal so it doesn't actually need any sealant.

Corrosion in the groove for the O ring makes a mess of the O ring though so I tend to smear it with silicone grease or hylomar. Silicone grease is easier to clean off next time.......

Any problem to use the black rocker cover sealant to smear the o-ring (I'm also replacing the rocker cover gasket).
