Power steering. Model Omega B facelift 2.2 diesel
« on: 22 February 2010, 22:52:23 »

I have just bought this car with the power steering not working. The previous owner says that it was working fine until he parked the car up around Christmas time. When he tried to move it in February the power steering was not working (I only have his word for this) The reservoir is full and there are no leaks. The drive belt is in place and the pump turning. There is no power assistance at all. I have turned the steering from lock to lock as suggested by another Omega user to no avail. Can anyone please help with the possible cause of this fault? I have checked the 30A fuse which is OK.

Thanks in advance

Are any of warning lights on e.g. ABS?

Does the ABS light come on when the ignition is first turned and then go out?

Mine did exactly the same and I wondered if it was due to the extreme low temperatures :question
I fitted a second hand £45 pump which worked fine. Mine was very very heavy lock to lock when parked but assistance resumed when revs increased. Was ok when driving until I slowed to go into a parking space.
I would source a good pump, not difficult to change.

On start up the ABS light comes on, and then goes out as expected. The only other warning light that is on is an airbag warning light which is down to a suspected broken wire. This is on my shopping list of things to fix. :P

I have tried all the fuses and they are OK. The cig lighter and heated seats etc. work OK and these seem to be on the same fuse.
Has anybody else got any ideas before I start ripping it apart? Thanks

This is looking like an electrical problem. Someone has been messing with the wiring plug to one of the two solenoids. It looks as if its connected ok though. Does anyone have or know where I can get a wiring diagram from. Haynes don't do a facelift book. Is there much wiring difference between the older spec and the facelift 2001 models particularly related to the power steering? Thanks

To conclude this string the problem was a sheared power steering pump shaft. A second hand pump has sorted the problem, Thanks to everyone for their help. Ian
