V6 engine burning oil
« on: 09 April 2010, 21:32:08 »

Hi!

My 3 litre V6 burning oil.  :'(
I need some help how could I investigate the source of the problem. So, I've bought the car approximately 5 mounth ago,it's my second V6 omega, I''ve done all the neccessary things on it (timing belt, filters, oil cooler, oil, etc) but I've experienced after 1 mounth later check oil level message on MID. Since this time the car is a nightmare for me. :-/  As I've calculated I 've lost arond 1,5 litre/1000km oil. My drivers side cam cover has a leak, but the problem isn't caused by this, because after start the car blows out blue smoke from exhaust in most of the cases, furtermore in higher revs we can see also blue smoke - when soembody plays with the gas pedal. I've made a CO and HC test, but HC was around 80-100, so I think it's not so relevant.
2 weeks ago number 5 cylinder has just sopped, we took out the spark plug and it was dead because of the  oil coke. The other spark plurs on the same side were in correct state.
After that I took down the exhaust system to analyze which side is problematic. The smoke has been coming from no135 cylinders side.

So, is it possible to find out the root of the problem? Is it a problematic oil ring, or just a head or vavlve seal problem?Any advice would be useful for me to start to find out waht's the problem.
Tomorrow I try to arrange a compression test on all cylinders.
What do you think about my problem?
Tx

I believe there was a thread some while back discussing valve stem seals on an engine using oil, seems for a while vauxhall changed the stem seals for "cheaper" ones which fail.

With any luck one of the experts will pass by and either confirm my thoughts or correct my stupidity .. :)

There was a batch of bad valve stem oil seals on 2.6 engines around 2001 but I have never heard of a problem on the 3.0.

First thing to do is the clean out the breather system thoroughly as this can cause elevated oil consumption if the crankcase is being allowed to pressurise. leaking cam cover gaskets is also a symptom of blocked breathers.

Failing that, the problem is either going to be rings or valve stem seals. Given that the plug is suffering, a valve stem problem will be on the intake side so you should be able to remove the plenum and manifold and see if there is evidence of oil on the back of the inlet valves.

Failing that a compression test, both dry and with a little oil down the inlets might tell you if the rings are weak.

Thanks, I will check the inlet valves after I removed the plenum and injector row.Compression test will be also done.

I've already cleaned the breather body (2 holes on it), but if it's possible I will remove it, what kind of seal should I use in case of reinstall?

Additional info when I removed the breather body pipes from plenum no gases came out, so I hope there is no problem with the engine so the compression rings perhaps OK,but I've heard about a stucking oil rings, is this a common problem or rare? I hope my problem will be solved with the head...

Have a look here for info on cleaning the whole breather system - it's not normally the throttle body that blocks but the plastic plenum cover and the pipes leading down to the breather box.

Kevin is on the mark, its no use doing half the job. You need to clean all of the breather system properly to gain any benefits, and that includes all of the pipes. Sadly is a ballaching job, and a dirty one but it made the world of difference to mine. Just use the guides he has already pointed out to you and all will be ok.
Not difficult - just a filthy job! ;)
It imperative that you do an oil and filter change regularly and use the proper GM stuff. I have found out over time that it is the only stuff that does the job! A trade card makes it just as cheap as the others too. :y

Compression test was done. In the problematic cylinder row (135) the compression was c1-12,c3-12,c5-13bar.I think these are good values. The spark which was removed from no5 cylinder was black again. :'(
One of my friend suggested me to remove the cylinder head in case of the problematic side,he thinks it will be a head problem.
If I push and release the gas peadal than smoke is coming, but for exaple if I hold on 3000rpm than no any kind of smoke. Any idea?
