Checking a cam cover for warp.
« on: 15 April 2010, 10:55:12 »

Yesterday I fitted a replacement (used) cam cover to the 246 bank in an attempt to stem a slight oil leak that was getting onto the manifold and making a right mess and stink.

So far (50 miles) all nice and dry on the outside.

Looking at the old cover and wondering how straight a serviceable cam cover should be, I did a quick check with a steel rule, workbench and feeler gauges. There are measurable gaps along the outer 'mating' surfaces, up to 0.35mm,  with the cover only touching the rule at the ends.

Looking down from above the edge wanders a lot, most noticeably in the area around the filler neck opening.

Are these features acceptable (desireable even) or does it mean the cover is pooped and only suitable for sale on fleabay? ;D

Obviously I now wish I had checked the replacement likewise for comparison, but it came from a reputable source and I did not wish to disrupt my train of thought.

History. GM gaskets fitted and breathers cleaned in January as part of HG replacement by respected oofer. At the time, old gaskets found to be smothered in clear sealant all round. Dont remember if they were GM or not, but previous owners spanner merchant clearly not a reader of oof :y

Probably the same clown that did not flare the end of a brake pipe and fitted oversize exhaust clamps. The list goes on.

Its possible to warp them but really not that common...more likely that the bolts have been over tightened...but basically the cover should sit squarely on a flat surface I believe...but you have to be sure the surface is flat in the first place lol

warping them is a myth, using second hand gaskets is asking for trouble

No its not, I had a pair which were in a right state a couple of weeks ago. It looks like they had been over tightened at some point.

And I would say that the new gaskets which were only replaced in January should be ok to re-use ;)
