My shed failed its mot on a few things today one of which was the minimum thckness of front pads  .No problem I thought so nipped to my local motor factors and got a new set,all well so far.So o/s front wheel off swear a lot at the two bolts holding the caliper on but eventually they come free  This is where my problems then started,effing brake pad sensor wire ! how do I get it off the old pad without snapping it? I don't want to break the one on the other side so  any help will be appreciated

Usually you cannot!  They are very fragile, and if you retain them you will need replacements.

Some members have done away with them and connected the two wires together to avoid the MID warning message.

I always replace them myself

If your pads were actually at minimum thickness, then the sensor would have worn through & you'd not be bothering trying to salvage whats left! 
You need a small/thin pin punch & gently push the sensor out of the butterfly anti-rattle clip. I know it can be done .... I've done it.

You only need to undo bottom 13mm bolt and swing caliper up on top bolt!  Pads will come out easily.

Usually you will need to fit new sensors!!

Thanks Andy and dbug looks like I will have to salvage one off my 'spares' car that is on the drive.I assume that it can be unplugged at the wing electrical connector or is it a trip to the stealers?

It unplugs in the wheel arch, next to similar looking the ABS connector. Leave something plugged in though to stopwater & cr4p from getting in there. If the sensor does brake, just chop it off, bare some of the insulation & join the wires together. This'll keep the display happy.

Think I might go for the cut and cover option to make things easier.
Sorry I am a pain but is the round piston supposed to move back into the caliper or is it fixed as mine won't budge and I cant get both pads into the space that I have got.

yes the piston retracts back flush into the caliper casting,a g clamp and an old pad will help but it should go in reasonably easily
