Engine Light
« on: 05 May 2010, 21:26:24 »

Hi guys can you help out with this question, I recently placed a topic entitled "warning light" I'm sorry to say it had little response.

My new question is will the warning light, "it's the one with the picture of the engine, orange in colour" go out if the fault is no longer present. Each time the light has come on the guy who looks after my car has had to plug the car into his diagnostic machine to clear the fault. Each time he says the fault is no longer present, so should the warning light go off. Or does it take a few days to clear it's self.

Answers greatly appreaciated.

It will go off when fault cleared.  What does he say the fault is?

Hi,

I think he said it was something like mass air flow circuit, when he checked it on his machine he said that the fault was no longer present, however the light was still on until he plugged in his machine. I just thought that if the fault wasn't there then the light would go out ??

This light has been coming on with various fualts since I had a new head gasket fitted. Any ideas ??

Where abouts in Oxford are you?
I'm in Kidlington...there's a few of us about who can always take a look etc.
Which engine do you have; 4 cyl or V6?

LOL.  I'm guessing the bloke didn't bother looking at the data.

Do you ever get up to Brackley, lets diagnose this one properly before you spend money on it.  I hope that garage didn't charge you for their poor diagnosis?

Hi I'm in Bicester, as for the engine I'm not sure, it's a 2.2 cdx auto 02 plate, pretty sure it's not a v6. Sorry for being vague but I'm not really mechanically minded  :-[

Hi The Boy,

As I'm only in Bicester I could pop over to Brackley anytime. I need to try and get this sorted as I'm taking the car to France in 4 weeks and the last think I want is some french mechanic messing around with it.

No worries,
The engine is a 4 cylinder, not a V6. It has a displacement of 2198cc and 144 bhp.
However, that engine is the only one that the paperclip test or pedal trick doesn't work on.
So, a code reader is the only option.
However, it has been known for a few 2.2's to work with the pedal trick...my 2.2 did.
That would give you a free way to try and figure out what the fault could be.
I'll go and find the link for the pedal trick in a minute. It's unlikely it'll work, but worth a go. And if it deosn't work on your car, that doesn't means there's anything wroing with it...that's just how it is.
For others reference;
It has been said only early 2.2's worked...mine was a Z22XE an on an '02' plate.

If the pedal trick doesn't work...your best bet would be to go over and see TheBoy in Brackley.

Thanks for that Josh, I have already tried the pedal trick and it didn't work. I'll see if the Boy offers to take a look, hopefully he will.

Thanks for your time with the help on this, it's much appreaciated.

your lucky enough to live near someone who has Tech2 diagnostics, and knows how to use it (unlike most vauxhall dealers) If I were you I would pay a visit to Brackley asap - pretty sure it will be a lot cheaper than a dealer as well.  :y

This had a 'present' fault of B1S1 no activity.  Cleared it, and it went, and didn't come back.  We're playing a 'wait and see' on that one.

However, live data showed that B1S2 was frequently running rich at idle. Knackered cat?

B1S1 was flicking rich/lean as expected. B1S2 was pretty stable...
